As
legend has it, the colonial sentries drew sustenance from a
variety of beverages while on the lookout for the Redcoats in
the thick New England woods. With rifle in one hand and a mug
in the other, there was far less spillage when a double handle
was added to the mug. The mug could be held with a better grip
while at the same time allowing the sentry to pull the trigger
on his musket; hence they were called trigger mugs.
